The Director-General, Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Prof. Sani Mashi, said the agency had entered into partnership with Fountain University, Osogbo, to ensure adequate meteorological stations and accurate forecast in the country.
Mashi, in a statement by Mr Muntari Ibrahim, the General Manager, Public Relations of NiMet, on Sunday in Abuja, disclosed the agency’s preparedness to partner with universities across the country to establish meteorological stations.
He said NiMet had adopted the approach to ensure undiluted, accurate and timely weather predictions in the country to enable Nigerians take informed weather decisions as well as plan their daily activities.
“This is one in a series of Memoranda of Understanding signed by NiMet with Nigerian universities to build or upgrade their existing weather infrastructure.
“This infrastructure will be added to the list of the nation’s meteorological stations with a view to enhancing quality and accuracy in NiMet predictions,” the statement quoted Mashi as saying.
According to Mashi, after a critical scrutiny, Fountain University, Osogbo, met the agency’s requirements to become a beneficiary in line with the prescribed standard of the World Meteorological Agency (WMO).
Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor of Fountain University, Prof. Amidu Sanni, commended NiMet for partnering with the private university, adding that the establishment of the weather station would impact positively on the university community.
He said that it would also aid farmers in Osun State to know what to plant and when to plant it, adding that the project would increase the research potentials of the institution.
Sanni said that the synergy would bring to bear collaborative researches in the field of meteorology between NiMet and Fountain University.
