The Chairman, Abuja Transport and Aviation Correspondents Association (ATACA), Mr. Chris Agabi has said that efficient transport industry will reduce unemployment in Nigeria.
Agabi made this statement in a seminar organized by the association in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Transportation, on Wednesday on: “Forging a Resilient Transportation Industry in Nigeria”.
He further explained that the coastal rail project which is expected to generate over 150,000 direct and indirect jobs opportunities during its execution, according to the feasibility study, the airport concession, the national carrier, the Aviation University and MRO policy, are all avenues to reduce unemployment.
Mr. Agabi cited Rwanda as an example and said that focused leadership and consistent government policy will ensure sustainable growth in the transport sector. He also called for continued improvement of the processes of doing business in the transport sector.
The Seminar which attracted participants from major establishments in the Federal Ministry of Transportation (FMOT), aviation experts, and other stakeholders, was declared open by The Minister for Transportation who was represented by the Director of Press, FMOT. In his address the Minister Rt. Hon, Rotimi Amaechi noted that developing the Transportation sector is cardinal to the economic recovery strategy of the present administration which brought about the merger of Transport and that of Aviation to become the present Federal Ministry of Transportation.
In his remark, The Minister of State, Aviation who was represented by the DG/CEO, Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Sani Abubarka Marshi stressed the benefits of concessioning the airport and urged the press to continue the public enlightenment campaign on the issue. He also enumerated the achievements of NiMet which included being the first and only meteorological agency in Africa to get ISO 2015.
