NiMet Partners Eta-Zuma Group West Africa on Weather Forecast for Coal Mining

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NiMet, has entered into a mutually beneficial partnership with Zuma 828 Coal Limited of Eta-Zuma Group West Africa, for the provision of daily on-spot weather forecasts tailored specifically for the company’s coal mining activities.

The process of the partnership, which began early this year with free daily weather forecasts of Ankpa Local Government Area, Kogi State issued to Zuma 828 Coal Limited by NiMet, was said to be largely accurate, impressive, successful, and beneficial to the company.

The company, as a result of the successes of the trial forecasts, has decided to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with NiMet in order to solidify,as well as ensure that the synergy is a long term one.

According to the Director-General/CEO, NiMet, Professor Sani Abubakar Mashi, ”the daily weather forecasts to be issued by NiMet to Zuma 828 Coal Limited, would aid the company to decide when to mobilise into the minefield for the obvious security of lives and property”.

Professor Mashi, who re-emphasized that NiMet is statutorily empowered by law to collect, share and promote the consumption of meteorological information in Nigeria, said the World Meteorological Organisation, WMO, the regulating body for meteorological organisations worldwide stipulates that meteorological data should notbe sold. However, the WMO recognizes and accepts the fact that every meteorological organisation can charge a fee to recover the cost of generating data for purposes of sustaining its operations hence, the token charge for data.

The NiMet boss applauded the company for being law abiding by coming to the appropriate authority to obtain weather information for its operations.

He further added that an 8-man MoU drafting committee, consisting of 4 team members each from both organisations should be constituted. The committee will spell out the responsibilities of both parties to ensure mutual satisfaction in the relationship.

In his reaction, the Executive Director, Eta-Zuma Group West Africa, Ambassador Joseph U. Ayalogu, explained that his firm has several client companies servicing different sectors of the Nigerian economy.Zuma 828 Coal Limited is one of them.

He expressed satisfaction in the services rendered by NiMet and said ” We got a taste of your services and now we want more”. He also added that since the MoU stipulates a long term engagement, the cost should be thus reflected.

The above is a testimony that the commercialisation drive of the Agency, and the need to diversify into hitherto uncharted territories, is gaining traction.
